Shades of Brown

The cows,

The field in which the cows graze, due to the long,

summer drought,

A large, fuzzy caterpillar climbing up a dried-up piece of grass,

The patio umbrella, too hot even to sit beneath,

The deer on the opposite side of the field, hopeful and searching for

a patch of something green,

The light sweater I grab to cover my bare arms, as soon as I step

inside the air-conditioned house,

The iced-coffee (with a touch of oat milk),

inside my mason jar glass . . .
